Can a wine fridge go in a cupboard? Yes, if its manufacturer explicitly permits that installation and you follow the model’s ventilation, clearance and access requirements. A freestanding fridge should not be enclosed just because it fits.
Check the manual before you check the opening. A built-under model can sit beneath a bench with its ventilation exposed. Putting it behind a closed cupboard door requires a model approved for that separate installation.
Three installations that are easy to confuse
| Type | What it means for your cupboard |
|---|---|
| Freestanding | Needs the open space and clearances specified in its manual. Do not treat it as a built-in appliance. |
| Built-under / underbench | Approved for a specified recess. Usually has exposed front ventilation; the manual still governs the opening and surrounding gaps. |
| Fully integrated | Designed for a specified joinery arrangement, potentially including a furniture door. Follow its dedicated installation instructions. |
Front ventilation is only part of the answer
The Vintec VWD050SBB-X is a useful example: its manual allows a built-in installation with prescribed clearances, but says it is not fully integrated behind a joinery door. A grille at the front does not give permission to hide the whole appliance in a closed cupboard.
At the other end, the Devanti WC-51B-BK manual specifies freestanding use and says it should not be recessed or built in. It requires 10 cm of space at the top, back and sides. Those instructions belong to that exact model; do not borrow them for another Devanti fridge.
Measure more than the fridge
- Identify the exact model. Find its installation manual and required recess dimensions.
- Plan the air path. Leave the specified vents and gaps unobstructed. A closed outer door can trap heat.
- Check door swing and shelf access. The door must open far enough to withdraw shelves without striking adjacent joinery.
- Check the room. Keep the appliance within its stated ambient temperature range and away from heat sources.
- Allow safe access. Plan the power connection, levelling and removal for servicing before the cabinetry is finished.
Which fridge should you buy?
