I'm a British-born, Australian-bred winemaker living in New Zealand. Being in the profession I am, two questions I'm always getting asked are: "What's your favourite wine?" — which I answer at bucketlist.wine — and "Do you have a wine fridge?"

The answer to the second question is yes. Two, in fact.

I bought my first wine fridge — a Liebherr WKt 5552 GrandCru — early in my career, when it represented a serious chunk of my salary. I still own it. That was over fifteen years ago, and it has been running ever since, quietly maturing wines I can't wait to open (but have to because the fridge is in Australia and I'm in New Zealand!). A few years later I added a smaller DeLonghi dual-zone unit in to the fold.

Buying both of those fridges involved a lot of research. Not because I enjoy spreadsheets and comparative analysis (okay, maybe I do a little), but for two more practical reasons: first, wine fridges are expensive, and I wanted to get the best cabinet I could for my money; second, I had a collection worth protecting. Most of the bottles had retail prices between $25 and $90—not priceless trophies, but wines I had chosen carefully and wanted to enjoy at their best. I was not simply trying to protect what I had spent; I was trying to protect the pleasure waiting inside the bottles. So, yes, I wanted to get it right. I wanted to get it right.
